Emma Alstott awarded National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

GRS is delighted to announce that Emma Alstott, senior in Global Resource Systems and Horticulture, has been awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) award.

The NSF GRFP is one of the most prestigious and competitive awards available to early-career scientists in the United States. It recognizes academic excellence and potential for impactful, innovative research and leadership in science. The fellowship began in 1952 to recognize and support students who show potential to make significant contributions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Through this program, students who are pursuing a full-time, research-based master’s or doctoral degrees receive 5 years of support, including 3 years of financial support which includes a stipend and tuition costs.

As a fellow, Emma is excited to join the Agricultural Sciences Ph.D. program at the University of New Hampshire. She will work under Dr. Xiaochen Yuan conducting plant pathology research. Emma’s research will focus on fire blight, a bacterial disease which affects apples and pears. Someday she hopes to have a career working to better understand the pathogenicity of emerging, infectious plant pathogens that threaten food security.
