GRS Students Share Internship Research and Global Experiences

During the Horticulture Department Seminar on March 23, 2026, Global Resource Systems students, Jess and Alaina, presented their academic and professional journeys, offering a glimpse into the diverse paths the GRS program makes possible.

Jess shared findings from an internship experience that led to original research on stranger danger behavior in a Panamanian bird species – exploring how the bird responds to familiar and unfailiar threats. The presentation highlited how GRS students engage in hands-on field research that bridges ecology, behavior, and global resource management.

Alaina traced a remarkable journey of how a study abroad experience in Rome led her to serving as president of the International Association of Agriculture Students (IAAS) at ISU, and ultimately attending the World Food Forum – one of the premier global gatherings focused on the futre of food and agriculutre. Alaina’s experiences have now opened the door to an exciting next chapter: spending the coming year as an intern with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome. Alaina’s story is a powerful example of how GRS can serve as a launching pad for international engagement, leadership, and a career on the global stage.

Together, the presentation reflected the breadth of opportunity available within GRS – from fieldwork in tropical ecosystems to leadership on the world stage. We are proud of both Jess and Alaina and look forward to seeing where their paths lead next.
