Learning Community

What is the GLOBE Learning Community?

The GRS Learning Community is your built-in network from the moment you join the major. Every GRS student is automatically part of it — no sign-up required. Through a weekly newsletter packed with opportunities, a calendar of social and professional development events, and a first-year course designed to set you up for success, the learning community keeps you connected to your peers, your program, and the broader GRS community throughout your time at Iowa State.

Think of it as the thread that ties the GRS experience together — the place where you find out about internship opportunities, meet students ahead of you in the program, and build the relationships that will follow you long after graduation.

Meeting other GRS students and hearing about their majors helped me make more connections. Getting to meet other students in the major encouraged me to participate in group events and engage in conversation and ask questions.

Become a GRS Peer Mentor

Are you a GRS student who loves the major and wants to help the next generation of Globies find their footing? The GLOBE Learning Community Peer Mentor position might be exactly what you are looking for.

Peer mentors play a central role in welcoming and supporting new GRS students during their first year. As a peer mentor, you will teach a first-year learning community course, coordinate social and professional events, connect individually with new students, and keep the GRS community informed through our weekly newsletter. It is a meaningful leadership opportunity that builds teaching, communication, and organizational skills you will carry into your career.
