May 23

Global Resource Systems students and faculty were delighted to participate in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute on April 30, 2025, which gathered over 350 students and educators from across Iowa.

GRS faculty led roundtable discussions in which IYI Borlaug Scholars presented research papers they had prepared about key global challenges and a solution they proposed in a country of their choosing.

GRS students Tyson Fleshner, Julia Letsche and Saumya Balaji addressed the entire Iowa Youth Institute about their own educational paths and involvement in addressing global challenges through high-impact experiences like service learning and international internships in GRS and CALS.

In the afternoon, GRS faculty Dr. Gail Nonnecke, Dr. Maria Wurzinger, Dr. Dorothy Masinde and Catherine Swoboda helped lead activity sessions in which IYI students learned about the work of ISU’s Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods in food and nutrition security in Uganda.
