Spring Break Service Learning in Uganda

March 8

A group of Iowa State University students, faculty, and staff will spend their spring break next week learning about agroforestry and serving the people in the Kamuli District of Uganda. Led by Lecturer Catherine Swoboda and University Professor Dr. Richard Schultz, nine students will spend 12 days in Uganda as part of the service-learning initiative of the Global Resource Systems (GRS) department.

ISU and the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods have been invested in improving the food security and quality of life for people in the Kamuli District of Uganda for the last decade. This spring break study abroad program will offer students the opportunity to become familiar with the ISU programs and enable students to directly contribute to improving the quality of life of the people of Kamuli, especially the children.

Students will spend several days working at a primary school in the Kamuli District to establish a tree nursery and woodlot. Students will also have the opportunity to visit Murchison Falls National Park and visit the source of the Nile River.
